Character Information
Name: Although she calls herself Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV (known nicknames include Ed and Radical Edward), her given name is Françoise Appledelhi. The former is what she has gone by for the majority of her life as well as the name she continues to use.
Fandom: Cowboy Bebop
Canonpoint: Session 12
Gender: Female
Age: ~ 13 (estimate)
Physical Description: X X X - Ed is a gangly shortie, in a sense - despite the lanky way she is perceived, she's actually only 5 feet tall. Her long legs and arms may give off the impression that she's taller than she is, along with the minimal amount of clothing she wears.
History: Edward's wiki page | Cowboy Bebop wiki page
Personality:
She crawls. She growls. She bites. Edward is an energetic, unmanageable beast of a girl with the spontaneously feral personality to match. Despite the crew of the Bebop's best efforts, there is no getting rid of her and there is no getting her to follow orders. She is a free spirit as far as anybody is concerned and nobody tries to mess with this fact of life. As an individual who knows no inhibitions or restraints, she knows only instinct and free will. Her straightforward mind jumps into situations obliviously, but head-on and fearlessly nonetheless. The wacky, nonsensical things she says and stunts she performs, such as walking on her hands and random rhymes she spouts are a result of her carefree and liberal way of life. Furthermore, this trait can be shown on many occasions in the show, most notably being a scene in Session 11; the crew of the Bebop attempts to track down an unknown parasite stowing away on the ship. Edward spends most of this time sleeping and running around cheerfully as if nothing is wrong despite being completely aware of its presence. At the end of the episode, however, she wakes from her slumber, presumably from a dream about pudding, to see the black, blob-like alien right in front of her. She then grabs it and eats it without hesitation, and exclaims that she can't eat any more pudding. This was an alien that three grown people feared and were knocked off of their feet by, yet she ate it with an airy smile on her face. Why? Because she wasn't afraid and she wanted to eat it, and that's that. This kind of wild behavior only further proves that no one will stop Edward from being Edward (or from eating live aliens, apparently).
To justify this behavior, it is safe to say that the only reason Edward acts this way is because she has learned all that she knows through the Internet. The interaction she has had with other humans in her life as a whole is very limited, and she has never had any close relationship to anyone before the Bebop. At first glance, Edward is a fun and silly young girl, which is true; this trait makes up a large part of her personality. However, this trait can also easily disguise the fact that she is not socially aware. She doesn't notice this, herself, because of her tendency to overlook things as per her oblivious nature. Even so, she rarely talks to others in a serious manner. She is always either fooling around or saying things that only she understands, such as:
"Du-u-u-ty calls! Three o'clock tea!"
She says this in a scene where Spike and Faye are discussing a possible bountyhead. This line of hers has no correlation the conversation whatsoever, but obviously it must mean something to her, as she can be seen laughing at it almost as if it's an inside joke with herself. These kind of random blabbers happen much too often to be a funny dash of humor, and instead are confusing and make Edward seem more aloof.
Possibly the most important philosophy of Edward's can be described in just one word - optimism. When the goings get rough, she'll stand tall and face everything with her ever-resilient attitude. She is the epitome of silly, cheerful, day-brightening smiles through and through and will most likely die still with a smile on her face. In a dismally grim world, Edward is a ray of sunshine, but this is no coincidence - her upbeat personality contrasts her surroundings on purpose. To be so young and lonely and frown all the time is something much too dreary for her. She lives in a place full of death and eternally dramatic and depressing grown-ups, but this doesn't hinder her at all. She understands more than she lets on, and even if she may be a little too straightforward, she doesn't question anyone on the Bebop's sadness. Session 12 is the first time in the series that the audience is able to see Edward react to the tension of the rest of the crew. Spike and Jet are on edge about Faye's disappearance, but Edward seems to be fooling around on Tomato, her computer, as always. In Session 13 (the direct continuation of Session 12), the crew has left her on the Bebop for at least a whole day while they are at another planet. She knows that all three of her adult friends left in less than a good mood, but she retains her own positive demeanor. She can be seen playing with Ein in this episode; regardless of her look of slight worry, she keeps playing with the dog with her signature toothy grin and giggle. At her core, Edward is just a friendly young girl who wants to see a universe as happy as her.
Edward has been on her own for the majority of her years, living an isolated and nomadic life on the desolate planet of earth after being abandoned by her father at a daycare. She left the daycare and pursued the life she lived until finding the Bebop. Because of this, she has had to learn to survive by herself and only for herself. For someone who taught themselves how to live at such a young age, Edward is somehow extremely intelligent. Genius-level intelligent. For example, she once played against one of the universe's most renowned chess players online and recognized that she had a chance to win and steal his title very early on in the game. She chose not to do this because she wanted to prolong the game; nevertheless. Her forte involves all things mechanical (though it is not limited to just this, as shown by the aforementioned instance). She is an exceptional hacker and spends the majority of her days on the computer, doing what she likes to call 'net diving.' She puts her goggles on, an article she is never seen without, and surfs the Internet. Her experience with computers goes much deeper than this, though. There is never a point in the show where she can't hack into a ship's system; she even manages to hack into a satellite in space. Though she occasionally becomes frustrated if she is unable to immediately hack into a system, she always manages to accomplish her morally questionable goals, whatever they may be. She is also quite skilled in dealing with other forms of technology. The prime case of this can be seen in Session 18; she is proven to be knowledgeable about VCRs. As an important note, Cowboy Bebop takes place in 2071, when the earth is practically an irrelevant wasteland. Many people have taken to space and other planets, bringing with them new kinds of technology and leaving what we know as modern (or what the '90s, the era of Cowboy Bebop's airing, knew to be modern) in the dust. With this in mind, the VCR would be considered ancient to any normal person in Edward's era. The fact that she knows how this device works, presumably without having ever seen it before, would take a large amount of quick understanding and comprehension on her part. In short, Edward knows how to navigate all things electronic. Her mind may seem as if it works in an eccentric and illogical way on the surface, but deep down, her brain is constantly running its gears in a truly prodigal fashion.
One must keep in mind that underneath it all, Edward is only a child. Because of this, she is a naïve and gullible person, regardless of how smart she may be. The ship is full of ultra serious and solemn adults who often get mixed up in ultra serious and solemn situations, including (but definitely not limited to) drug deals, murders, and sex. Usually, she has only a vague idea of what these things may be, as she is usually left on the ship while the other members are taking care of business, if you will. She is not afraid to ask about what she does not know, though most of the time she will be waved off or ignored. Even if this does not deter her, it definitely does not help her in learning about the world around her. She is still very uneducated about many things of her universe - on earth, there wasn't much for her to learn about aside from rocks and sand - which leaves her, in a sense, as a sheltered child with no knowledge to go off of. Being a child also leaves her with the desire for a parental figure, deep down inside of her. She is lonely, and this is something that cannot be denied. The friends she made on the Bebop could not fill the hole inside of her that wanted more than friendship. It is for this reason that she ultimately leaves the crew in favor of her father, desire how irresponsible he is.
Abilities: Edward is extremely literate in all things involving technology. Though her skills in this area are not exactly specified, it is quite clear that she is an exceptional hacker and mechanic. It is presumed that she created her own computer, which she named Tomato - Tomato is basically a super computer built to look like a desktop. She made it with many features that would be considered even advanced in her world of developed technology, such as a holographic communicator, for instance.
In addition to this, Edward is also very flexible. Her main forms of transportation include walking on her hands, somersaulting, and crawling. She can climb and jump very high, this being demonstrated when she once jumped up and grabbed a bar on the ceiling, put her feet through the other end, then let go so she was hanging from it only by her feet.
Character Information
First Person Sample:
Reeeeeeeee-oooooOOOOooooooo! [ Edward runs across the room in a circle, remote control in hand. While making these zoom-like sound effects, she is also moving the joystick on the remote from left to right, left to right, left to right. ] Ed loves to play with the other ships! Hehehehe!
[ She makes an abrupt stop, skidding on her feet, once she reaches the nearest window. Watching the spaceship outside go haywire and follow her joystick's every move, she can't help but laugh again. ] Fun fun fuuuuun... Nun nun nun... Fun fun fu— [ Stopping short of spewing more nonsensical rhymes, she looks quite taken aback by the scene playing in front of her. The ship has crashed into another ship that she didn't notice! Pushing her face against the window, she lets out an embarrassed titter. ]
O-Oooooopsies... Pilot error! Hehe... [ Rubbing the back of her head nervously, she sinks below the window until she's laying on the ground. ] Maybe next time Ed will get the bounty, for sure! [ Then, she suddenly regains all lost energy and jumps into the air happily. ] Yeaa-a-aaaaaah!
Third Person Sample:
Edward is not a hateful person - she holds no resentment in her heart for those who have wronged her, and definitely does not dislike anyone for petty reasons. In fact, she's not entirely sure if she has ever disliked anyone in the history of ever. But... there's a first for everything. She vowed from the day she arrived at this mysterious 'school', or whatever it's called, that she would get revenge on whatever heartless monster took Tomato and Ein and her clothes and her goggles all away from her. She's not sure how she's survived this long without any of these key components that are essential to her survival, and she's not sure how much longer she'll survive. Perhaps she hasn't survived, after all, and this is really just hell that she's in...
"Zzzzzz... More pudding..."
Somehow, her mind travels from the comforting thoughts of home and revenge to the even more comforting thoughts of her very own dreamworld's pudding. She has seemed to have forgotten that this isn't the Bebop - this is class - and she can't sleep whenever or wherever she wants to.
However, she remembers this bit of information very clearly when she accidentally bobs her head to far to the side in her sleepy stupor and falls out of her seat. "Oooooooof..." She lets out a tired sigh followed by a prompt yawn and blush. "Did Ed disrupt the... 'class'?" She looks around at the room full of NPCs and suddenly feels no regret or embarrassment once she remembers they're only faceless creatures without any emotion whatsoever.
"But Ed is so tired, she... she...she... " Mid-sentence, Edward has fallen asleep on the ground once again. This time, though, it wasn't an accident.
